Autochthonous Varieties

Tvrdos Monastery Winery (Podrumi manastira Tvrdos) produces the following autochthonous varieties:

Background

The Serbian Orthodox Monastery Tvrdos, some four kilometers west of Trebinje, dates back to the 15th-century. References to its cellars can be found in old epic folk poem, and the winemarking tradition has long been preserved by the Monks. On the vineyards of Trebinjsko polje can be found some 70 hectares of old Vranac plantations, whilst a further 60 hectares of young vineyards has been planted in Popovo polje. Monastery Tvrdos has two cellars; one in an old stone cellar from the 15th century. The different height levels of the cellars allows for the gravitational transportation of wine during processing.
